Commentary Appropriate For Today’s Changing World

The Cross

Galatians 6:14
14May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which[a] the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ my God!
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.

In the second verse of the wonderful hymn of the faith, When I Survey The Wondrous Cross, Sir Isaac Watts catches the essence of Paul’s words in Galatians.

Lord, regardless of what I may say, do, or accomplish here on earth, please help me to remember that the only thing worthy of boasting about, is what you did on the cross. Were it not for your willingness to sacrifice yourself for my sins, I would be condemned to eternal death. Yet, because you loved me so much, I can now look forward to an eternity in worship of you. Father, help me to lay aside all the earthly things that entice me: my arrogance, my foolish pride, my selfishness, my anger, and those earthly pleasures that distract me from you.
