It's important to cover because the pope was important and the Catholic church is large, but Hugh isn't a Catholic to my knowledge. People in other Christian denominations outside of Catholicism, including me, have some serious issues with the Catholic church and maybe Hugh shouldn't have covered it with such vigor as if the Catholic church were equal with other Christian denominations.
